As part of our Alumni Stories project, we are delighted to share another glimpse into the journeys our graduates take after English Studies.

 

We are proud of our alumna 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗜𝗲𝘃𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗼𝗻, who recently participated in the PALA (Poetics and Linguistics Association) Conference in Uppsala, alongside Prof. 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲, who supervised her MA thesis, titled “Exploring Multimodal Storytelling in Contemporary Award-Winning Picture Books: A Stylistic Study.”

 

Philomena’s academic journey has taken her from her MA research to her recent work on verbal imagery and landscape representation in climate fiction.

 

In Philomena's own words: "It was an absolute pleasure to participate in the PALA 2027 conference at Uppsala University this past week. My presentation titled "The Landscape of Area X:

Analysing Verbal Imagery and Emotion in Jeff VanderMeer's "Annihilation" allowed me to present my pilot study, in which I explore the possibility of using Davide Castiglione's stylistic model of verbal imagery for the analysis of prose. I was grateful for the opportunity to connect with the research community in the Ecostylistics SIG and gain valuable feedback and inspiration for further research."

 

We are especially happy to see a supervisor and our former student, now a colleague, sharing the international stage, with Davide’s work informing and inspiring Philomena’s continuing research.

 

And as the last days of summer gently give way to September, we are looking forward to seeing everyone back on campus very soon.
